What is GHB?

GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is a synthetic psychoactive substance commonly used as a recreational drug and a sleep aid. It is known by street names such as G, Liquid E, and G water. GHB induces feelings of euphoria, reduces anxiety, and often increases sexual desire. However, it poses serious risks, including overdose and respiratory problems. GHB is also notorious for its use as a date-rape drug due to its ability to cause loss of consciousness.

GBL (gamma-butyrolactone) is a closely related chemical that converts to GHB almost immediately upon entering the body. As it is a lot more potent, a lesser dosage is required to have the same effect.

GHB/GBL usually appears as a colorless, odorless, bitter, or salty liquid, often sold in small bottles or vials.

Signs of GHB misuse

While GHB may initially offer euphoria and decreased inhibition, its recreational use can lead to addiction and severe health consequences. Individuals may experience nausea, confusion, and respiratory issues. Addiction to GHB is challenging to overcome, often requiring professional assistance. Even with prolonged treatment, relapse rates remain significant, emphasizing the importance of addressing underlying causes and comorbid conditions.

How to stop or moderate

Comprehensive approach

Ceasing GHB use can be daunting due to intense withdrawal symptoms. Gradually tapering off under medical supervision is recommended to mitigate these effects. Seeking professional help, such as therapy or rehabilitation programs, is crucial for successful cessation. It’s essential to address any underlying psychological issues contributing to addiction and develop coping strategies for managing cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Inpatient programs

In cases of severe GHB addiction, inpatient treatment may be necessary. Inpatient programs provide a structured and supportive environment, including detoxification, therapy, counselling, and education on relapse prevention. If someone is struggling to quit and experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms, seeking professional help and considering inpatient treatment is highly recommended.

Detox from GHB

Detoxing from GHB involves managing withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, and hallucinations. Medical supervision during detox is vital to ensure safety and provide support.

Gradually reducing GHB dosage helps alleviate withdrawal severity. Supportive therapies, including counseling and medication-assisted treatment, can aid in detoxification and long-term recovery. It’s essential to prioritize self-care and seek ongoing support to prevent relapse during the detox process.
